“Keep it cool” is some good advice for many situations in life. Strangely enough, it’s also a good idea when it comes to roofing your house. In fact, in building technologies, there is a methodology for roofing called “cool roof” technology. In simple terms, it’s covering your roof with paint, shingles, or roofing tiles that are more reflective than your average roof. This reflects more sunlight and absorbs less heat, keeping the inside of your home cooler overall.
Cool roofs will improve the comfort of indoor spaces that aren’t typically cooled by an air conditioner. And speaking of air conditioners, since a home with a cool roof has generally lower temperatures, it will typically require less air conditioning. This will reduce your energy costs, lower your electricity demand, and may help prevent power outages. In some cases, cool roof surfaces might be more susceptible to algae or mold growth, but there are coatings that can be applied to prevent that for a few years at a time.
